Add Microsoft to the hit list of this blow. The PS3 is now the most future-proof Blu-ray setup on the market.
Currently it is the only player which contains a Blu Ray 2.0 profile. Once Sony begins releasing it’s 2.0 stand alones it will more than likely be the cheapest player available also.
Playstation known for it’s backward capabilities with games from past gen software will also allow you to play all those old DVDs you’ve collected over the years.
It’s also my understanding the HDMI issues the PS3 had, that reads the data on a standard DVD at 480P and upscales the video resolution from 720p up to 1080i for those with compatible TVs, have been fixed. This include upscaling for old games too.
The Xbox just became a dinosaur over night. I’m sure you will see a costly Blu Ray add on in the next few months. However with Xbox’s independence from the actual technical use of a high-def player for game play there will be virtually no interactivity the PS3 has.

You forget that Microsoft has another horse in the race – digital downloads. They’ve pushed those heavily, even over the HD-DVD player, via Xbox Live Marketplace. I’m sure they’ll eventually have a Blu-Ray player that uses the 2.0 profile, and may even be future-proof as well via console updates, but it’ll still be second banana to their download business.

I definitely think digital downloads & rentals will make it impossible for Blu-Ray to have the kind of penetration DVD has had.
