I was pleased to receive a request to use one or more of my CC-BY Flickr photos in an online slideshow. Details to follow once the re-use has occurred. Since I’ve asked to be credited as “Alex Harden / alexharden.org”, I guess that’s the push I needed to finally create a home page there!
Updates (4/2): The beginnings of a home page are up.

A Python script I made to sort my digital pictures.

Interesting DMCA-related case.

Because Supreme Commander reminded me of Total Annihilation, I’m playing Spring again, and really getting into it this time.

“Every stadium will be equipped with high-definition equipment and will be recabled before the upcoming season.”
So I got all pumped up for the “fans only” Internet ticket pre-sale for Rush’s June 29th show in Scranton this morning. I was on the website at 10am ready to purchase three of the closest tickets I could. Once the virtual gates were open and I got past the initial prompts, it took the musictoday.com site over 10 minutes after I told it what tickets I wanted to show me a page that gave me seats in the 31st row (EE) of the 100-level section in front of stage left. 31st row?
I know Rush is a huge concert draw, but I doubt that the majority of people that were purchasing tickets at that time intend to go to the show. I predict there will be a lot of these tickets available from professional ticket brokers for much higher than face value. There was nothing in the pre-sales process to tie a ticket purchase to attendance, such as mandatory will-call or an ID check at the gate. When will artists start to care about this issue?
I’m glad I don’t go to a lot of stadium/arena shows, or this would bug me a lot more.
On the bright side, this will be my 15th Rush show!

I’m a huge fan of Total Annihilation, and when I saw SupCom I immediately related the two. Turns out they are indeed hugely related.

I’m really digging this album right now.

VMware ESX definitely uses NUMA effectively.

I’m interested in the Apple TV device, but I would have to be able to transcode both audio and video content into an iTunes-compatible format to make it useful to me.

Scot puts a Home Depot sales droid into a tizzy.

I would need one of these to connect the HDMI output of an Apple TV or other device to the currently unused DVI port of my HDTV.
The U3 platform came on the Sandisk Cruzer Micro 4GB flash drive I recently purchased and instead of formatting it into oblivion I actually used it. Apps I already used in a portable fashion (on the Cruzer Micro 512MB it’s complementing) like Firefox, PuTTY, and FileZilla have U3 builds, as well as some other ones I haven’t previously used portably like WinSCP and OpenOffice. It’s a pretty slick platform, although I have to think Sandisk was inspired by John Haller’s PortableApps.com work. Looks like he published a similar platform that I hadn’t previously seen or used.

An update from Ty.
I was flipping through the excellent Studio M pics of Blackfield’s Philly show of last Tuesday and almost immediately noticed something weird in this pic of bassist Seffy Efrat. Can you spot it?
After a handful of full listens to the full-res version of the new Rush single “Far Cry” I can definitely say I’m pleased. I’m also relieved; the sound is loud & proud and doesn’t clip like Vapor Trails did. I think I’m really going to like Snakes and Arrows.
Anyone else notice how much like the Grace Under Pressure lettering the newest incarnation of the RUSH logo is? Check it out at rush.com.
About a month after last month’s snowstorm, we get another one today. Both times, it’s cancelled a Friday night jam session at John’s. C’mon, Spring!

“Fantasy Baseball is the great escape for me.”

I’m an Artoo fan.

I’m not going to defend VMware’s product pricing, but this article neglects to mention that ESX 2.5 customers under a current SnS contract (as cited) received a free upgrade to VI3 Standard, which provides equivalent, non-clustered functionality per host.

The DMCA just isn’t enough for big media.

All these reasons miss the point that the video clips’ copyright owners don’t want to be bothered with the cost of going after the actual infringers: those who originally uploaded the videos under false pretenses.

An interview with Dug. King’s X is recording another album with producer Michael Wagener, who produced “Ogre Tones”. Can’t wait to hear it.

I like the Chargers’ “Powder Blue” uniforms. Looks like they’re integrating some of those elements (like the white helmet) into their new ones.

A cool evolution in SVG support.

Via Psychophil: A great guide.

Autopatching ESX 3.x hosts with an IIS repository (like I implemented).

Agggh! I want my “Knights”! Stupid American-Idol-watching masses!

Follow-up to my link to Jon Udell’s C-Span entry: “C-Span has announced that it will make “video of congressional hearings white house and other federal events” available under a license that requires ATTRIBUTION, and limited to NONCOMMERCIAL use.”

I’d like to know the details of the “exceptionally attractive offer on the table” that Rendell speaks of.

Wha’choo talkin’ ’bout, Willis?

“[Sources close to the Penguins organization] said the tone from the public side has been unduly adversarial for the last two months, including a table-pounding outburst by Mr. [PA Governor Ed] Rendell during a Jan. 18 meeting.”

Cool. My official OpenID (for now) is http://aharden.wordpress.com/.

Excellent automation of VMware ESX scripting, although I’m using an HTTP repository.

Via Psychophil. This will only have teeth if GE both reduces or eliminates “standard-efficiency” bulbs and also marks the HE bulbs with the expected brightness level compared to the old ones.
I can’t believe I just found out about the airing of remastered ST: TOS episodes after visiting StarTrek.com last week, but that’s life. I checked out the my first one last night, “Space Seed“, one of the greatest Original Series episodes (it spawned Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan). I couldn’t tell from the FAQ whether we were going to be able to see it in HD or 16:9, so I recorded it from WLYH-DT. The episode was 4:3 windowboxed, and I couldn’t tell if it was HD. I assume it wasn’t.
However, the episode looked gorgeous, and the digitally-rendered space scenes and opening montage weren’t distracting at all. The credits had the same look and feel as the original. The cleaned-up filmstock was noticably colorful, and even the ending credits were faithful.
I’m recording WHP-DT’s showing late tonight to see if it’s in 16:9 just in case. After that, I’ll subscribe to one of the weekly showings so that I can re-enjoy all these great episodes. I just wished I’d noticed them sooner! They’ve been airing one per week since last September!
Update (3/5): WHP-DT showed last week’s episode, “The Paradise Syndrome”, in 4:3 last night, even though Comcast’s guide expected “Space Seed”. I just watched the beginning. I’ll watch the rest of it later and will subscribe to WLYH-DT’s weekly offering since they seem to be following the published schedule.
